The other day, while riding my motorbike through the streets of Bali, I saw a little boy being chased by a duck. The sight made me laugh—it was one of those simple, unexpected moments that life hands you. I grabbed my camera, walked over to the boy, and asked if I could take a photo. With a big smile, he proudly showed me his duck—his best friend.
I took the photo, and today, I decided to print it. I found a shop, had it framed, and went back to find the boy. His name is Wayan. When I handed him the picture, his face lit up with joy. His father had told me how much Wayan loved that duck, and seeing his happiness in that moment was something I won’t forget. He came over to me and gave me the biggest hug I’ve had in a very, very long time.
The family invited me in for coffee and a banana. I sat with Wyan’s father, who shared a bit about the place—they have a little place where they serve food, and they also drive taxis—doing a bit of everything. It was just very, very nice to have a little talk and connect over these stories. I met Wyan’s little brother, his grandparents, and his mother. There was something warm and grounding about being welcomed into their home, all because of a spontaneous photo.
Moments like these remind me why I carry a camera. It’s not just about capturing images—it’s about connecting with people, sharing experiences, and creating memories that last. What started as a funny scene on the street became a moment I’ll cherish—a reminder that even the smallest encounters can lead to something meaningful.
Not long ago, my life looked very different. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that everything can change—quickly, unexpectedly. That’s why it’s so important to pause, to notice, to create memories. Because even something as simple as a duck chasing a kid down a street in Bali can turn into a story that stays with you.
To Wayan and his family—thank you. For the coffee, the stories, and the reminder that sometimes the smallest moments are the ones that matter most.
